This year, we’re fortunate to have several good candidates seeking the DFL endorsement to represent our Ward on the city council. However, Marit Brock has the talent, experience and passion that we need to represent us in City Hall.
For twelve years, I had the privilege of working for Senator Paul Wellstone. Both he and his wife Sheila were good friends and mentors. Paul, and his way of practicing politics, continues to inspire me and many others.
Based on his early experience in organizing low-income women in Rice County, Paul rejected negativity and emphasized people-centered politics. He would often say, “Politics is about improving peoples’ lives.”
Marit has practiced that kind of politics. During the recession, her and her family’s neighborhood had a bad landlord, many vacant properties and demoralized residents. The future wasn’t hopeful. But Marit saw possibilities, not problems. She brought demoralized neighbors together to claim their power and find solutions. With ingenuity and tenacity, they worked together, and with the West 7th Fort Road Federation and the City, they have built a vibrant neighborhood improving the daily lives of many and making our city better.
That’s the politics that motivates Marit. She believes residents and small business owners working together can improve our community and at the same time, insist that our city government be responsive to our needs. She’s made it happen.
Marit has led the Senate District 65 DFL, served as President of the West 7th Federation, and is a key leader in the movement to reduce gun violence in our communities. She’s joined with neighbors to address issues across the Ward such as in the Stryker and Baker neighborhoods of the West Side and downtown with the Dorothy Day Center expansion. Marit knows our strength is in our diversity as a community. Because of her experience, she understands how to meld transit, job creation, economic development, and recreation opportunities for our kids in order to keep and build strong and vital neighborhoods.
Marit is motivated by the magic of people-centered politics that improves lives. That’s where she draws her passion from.
I hope you’ll join me in endorsing Marit Brock to represent Ward 2 on the St. Paul City Council at the DFL Ward 2 Convention on Sunday. She is committed to economic and social justice and has the character, skills and experience that will serve the citizens of our Ward very well.
